Creating a buzz using social media

A doctor’s conference, a rock ‘n’ roll concert or even an electronic exhibition, it does not matter what type of event you are organizing; if you want to get the word out, create a buzz, you should consider using Social Media as your main marketing tool. Social media sites such as Facebook and YouTube have 101 and 258 million users respectively and more than 50% log on a regular basis (daily & weekly). By using social media sites to market, you can communicate to their enormous user base and convert these audiences into registrants, delegate, concertgoers etc easily.

How you can use the following social media to create a buzz for your event:

Social networks: Facebook, LinkedIn, MySpace, and Twitter fall into this category. These sites enable you to find and link to other people. You can then keep up to date with that person's contact info, interests, posts, etc. By creating a community for your event, you inform users that your event is taking place and let interested users can create a buzz about your event.

Social news:
Sites like Digg, Sphinn, Newsvine, and BallHype let visitors read about news topics and then vote and/or comment on the articles. Articles with more votes are promoted to a more prominent position. Post a short but well written piece about your event to gain attention.

Social sharing: Sites like Flickr, Snapfish, YouTube, and Jumpcut let you create, upload, and share videos or photos with others. If you are planning to have a speaker at your conference, upload a small segment about the speaker or his speech as a hook. If it is a concert, upload a music video. Make sure you include date, time, venue, and registration and website urls to enable interested audiences to locate you easily.

Note: These are just few of the social media sites online. There are many more social media sites online, which might suit your purposes better. So, make sure you research their demographics and community mindsets before selecting which of these sites will work best for you.

To summarize, social media is an interesting and cost effective marketing tool that uses social networks, online communities, blogs, wiki’s etc. to carry on a two-way dialogue with interested audiences. These social media allow you to interact with others, create and promote content that can get links and viral attraction, with the right strategy you can reach key influencers using this medium.
